School Visits

“Doug Gibson’s author visit for Tales of a Fifth Grade Knight was informative, entertaining, humorous and had a very nice flow. He did an excellent job of making the presentation engaging and appropriate for our group of fifth and sixth graders.”
~ Justin Pilla, 6th grade teacher, Rainbow Community School, Asheville, NC

Invite me to your school!

I’m the father of a middle-grade student and an avid reader of middle-grade literature. As a result, I love school visits. Invite me to your school, and your students can learn where I get my ideas, how I write fiction and non-fiction, how I got published, and more. And, as an added bonus, you can look forward to a big surge of interest in reading and writing when your students have the opportunity to meet an author in person.

Here are the presentations I can offer your school:

How I write —

Not just fiction but also non-fiction. I cover topics like brainstorming, outlining, drafting, interviewing, and the all-important pitch process.

How I got published —

An inspiring story of hard work and dedication that paid off in my first book, meant to inspire commitment in all areas of accomplishment.

Q&A —

Sometimes the best sessions are just answering all questions about the writing and publishing process. If the kids are game, I am!

Just a reading? —

The reviews are in: I excel at dramatic readings. If you’re just after entertainment or a break from routine, I’ll happily read excerpts from my work, or others’, if  you prefer.

Anything else (within reason) —

Do you have a curricular objective you think bringing in a professional writer will help with? I’m happy to hear what you have in mind, and will gladly tailor my presentations accordingly.

“Doug did a great job keeping the attention of 87 children! He got them involved in the story and his characters’ antics, he engaged and related to the students, and he was animated and quite funny. He willingly answered the children’s questions and encouraged them to read and write stories – using their creativity and imaginations. His visit was close to ideal, and I would highly recommend him.”
~ Kathryn G., Friends of the Hot Springs Library, Hot Springs, NC

The best age ranges for my presentations are grades 2-6, though readings can include younger students, and Q&A and How I Write can include older grades. And I can accommodate all sizes of audiences, though a Q&A session works best with smaller groups.

Payment: at the moment I charge for school visits on a sliding scale, though I do like to have my travel expenses paid for. Get in touch and I know we can work something out.

Books: for paid visits, you can arrange with a local bookstore for sales of Tales of a Fifth Grade Knight. Or you can order copies directly from Capstone for a 40% discount and either pass the discount on to your students or use the book sales as a fundraiser. Otherwise, I’m happy to sell books myself for 15% off list price.

The best way to get in touch with me is by e-mail. So write me today and set up a visit!

“The students loved Doug Gibson’s presentation of his book Tales of a Fifth Grade Knight – especially the parts where he related the story back to his own childhood.”
